There are five main airports in Kenya, and a number of airstrips. The main airport is located in Nairobi, which is the capital city of Kenya. Quite a number of local and foreign airlines use these airports to connect passengers to destinations within the country and abroad.

The main airstrips and airports in Kenya are:

  1. Jomo Kenyatta International Airport ( JKIA or NBO)

JKIA is the country’s main international airport, and it is located in Nairobi. It is one of the largest airports in the East African region, and the 9th busiest in Africa. JKIA has flights to Kenya from destinations like Guangzhou, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Zurich and Johannesburg. Within Kenya, there are flights from JKIA to Mombasa, Eldoret and Kisumu among other places. JKIA is also the hub for a number of local airlines such as Kenya Airways, Fly540 and Jambojet.

  1. Kisumu International Airport (KIS)

Kisumu Airport is among the largest airports in Kenya, and it serves flights to popular Kenyan cities like Nairobi. Kisumu Airport is the entry point for visitors exploring the Western part of the country.

  1. Eldoret International Airport (EDL)

Eldoret Airport serves Eldoret and the neighbouring parts of Uasin Gishu County. There are flights to Nairobi Kisumu and Mombasa.

  1. Moi International Airport, Mombasa

Moi International Airport is the largest airport at the coast of Kenya. It would take a day to travel by road from Nairobi to some destinations at the coast.  However, a flight from Nairobi to Mombasa Airport reduces that time significantly.

  1. Wilson Airport

This airport is one of the busiest airports in Kenya, serving destinations within and around the country. Wilson Airport is located along Lang’ata Road, about 18km from JKIA.

  1. Malindi Airstrip

This airstrip serves Malindi and its environs.  Malindi is a popular destination, and it has attractions such as Malindi Museum, Malindi Marine National Park and the Vasco da Gama Pillar. From Malindi, you can reach attractions in Watamu.

  1. Ukunda Airstrip

Ukunda Airstrip is important to the tourism industry at the coast of Kenya. It serves Ukunda area, and Diani Beach, which has an expansive shoreline with dozens of beach resorts.

  1. Nanyuki Airstrip

Take the least time to reach Mount Kenya region by booking a flight to Nanyuki Airstrip. This airstrip is just 15 minutes away from Nanyuki, and from there, you can reach Samburu, Isiolo and Ol Pejeta Wildlife Conservancy.

  1. Amboseli Airstrip

This airstrip serves Amboseli National Park. It is within the park, about 156km from Nairobi. It serves scheduled and charter flights to the park.

  1. Keekorok Airstrip

This airstrip is located in Maasai Mara, and it is about 225km from JKIA. It serves Keekorok Lodge and the neighbouring areas.

  1. Manda Airstrip

Manda Airstrip serves the Lamu Archipelago. It is the only access point for visitors heading to Lamu Island. This airstrip is located in Manda Island, and it is about 450km from JKIA. There are also flights from this airstrip to Malindi Airstrip.

  1. Mara Serena Airstrip

This airstrip serves Mara Serena Safari Lodge and the neighbouring areas. It is located in the rolling plains of Masai Mara, about 225km from JKIA.  There are scheduled flights from Maasai Mara to Lewa Downs, Nanyuki and Samburu.

  1. Lewa Airstrip

Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is one of the attractions in the northern part of the country, overlooking the slopes of Mount Kenya. Lewa Airstrip is located within this conservancy, and it is about 198km from JKIA.

  1. Ol Kiombo Airstrip

It is one of the main airstrips within Maasai Mara National Reserve. Most airlines in Kenya, with domestic flights to Maasai Mara, use this airstrip. Other airstrips in Maasai Mara are Musiara Airstrip and Kichwa Tembo Airstrip.

These are the main airstrips and airports in Kenya. Air transport is efficient when heading to the main cities and towns, as well as to far-flung destinations like Samburu.
