Even before Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit settles in office, pressure is already mounting on him to sort out longstanding leadership wrangles he inherited from his predecessor Eliud Wabukhala. The man at the centre of controversy is Rev Sammy Wainaina. He was ordained in 1996 and has risen through the ranks to his current position as the Provost of All Saints Cathedral Nairobi. He is being accused of failing to obey the church regulations ordering for the elections of Mothers’ Union.
The diocese’s elections should be held on November 6 2016. He is alleged to be handpicking the people he is comfortable working with and ignoring to call for the elections. Claims of tribalism have also been leveled against him. The chairlady Margaret Njoroge is said to be dishing out money so as to remain chair while Wainaina has abolished the widows’ department.
Ole Sapit is also being asked to ensure that a new Mothers’ Union coordinator is appointed as the current one, Rev Winnie Mwangi is a volunteer who reports to the All Saints Cathedral office twice a week. She is known to be a bully and had at one time, clashed with Rev Ruth Gitari in public. She brags that it was Wainaina who pleaded with her to take up the position. Her tenure ends in February 2017.
There is a proposal that the coordinator should be an independent person employed by the diocese as it is in Kericho where Emma Ronoh is not a priest. There have been cases of people holding positions in which they do not merit. Canons Mercy Awiti and Waqo do not qualify to be canons but have been favoured by Wainaina, it is claimed.
The All Saints Cathedral vicars are also said to be at war with one another and with the curates in some churches as they influence the appointment of curates they prefer working with. Manje of St Augustine is said to be lobbying for Rev Lillian Muthoni from Jamhuri as his curate. Another thorny issue is the transfer of Rev Muoko from Christ Church Westlands to St Luke’s. There have been complaints of financial misappropriation against Mwoko.
