Higher education in Sudan has a long history of interaction with politics and over the years there has been an increase in the amount of Sudan universities.

The public and private education systems inherited by the government after independence were designed more to provide civil servants and professionals to serve the colonial administration than to educate the Sudanese.

The University of Khartoum has the vision is to participate, through its role in the field of higher education and scientific research, in the creation of a unified, developed and advanced Sudanese Nation. The University aspires to be independent both academically and financially, elevated in the different aspects of knowledge and to link the programs and research it offers with the requirements of permanent development in Sudan.

Sudan University of Science & Technology
The mission of the Sudan University of Science & Technology (SUST) is to achieve sustained excellence in the interrelated areas of undergraduate and postgraduate education and community services through several highly successful outreach programs. SUST strives to maintain excellence in teaching curricula in diverse fields such as engineering, computer science, business, life sciences, radiological science, music and drama, applied and fine arts and physical education.

University of Gezira is a public university located in Wad Medani, Sudan. It is a member of the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World.

The International University of Africa
The International University of Africa is a public University in Khartoum, Sudan. It is a member of the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World. Arabic is the medium of instruction in the faculties, institutes and centers of the university on the bachelor degree level. It is also the medium of instruction and dissertation writing for the post-graduate studies. The Academic Council of the University may give consent to the use of a foreign language in exceptional cases.
