Born in Brookline, Massachusetts on May 29, 1917, Kennedy was a member of the Democratic political party and assumed office in the White House on January 20, 1961. He was preceded by Dwight D. Eisenhower and succeeded by Lyndon B. Johnson, who was also Vice President during his administration. Previous to Kennedy’s presidency, he was a United States Senator from Massachusetts between January 3, 1953 and December 22, 1960 and was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Massachusetts’ 11th district between January 3, 1947 and January 3, 1953. He married Jacqueline Lee Bouvier in 1953 and was married until his death by assassination in 1963 at the age of 46. He attended Harvard University and served in World War II as the commander of Motor Torpedo Boats PT-109 and PT-59. He was recognized as the youngest politician to be elected to office in the United States at the mere age of 43. He was a practicing Roman Catholic and the only to ever assume office in the White House as President. He was also the only president to ever receive a Pulitzer Prize. At the height of his career, Kennedy dealt with foreign affairs including the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Bay of Pigs Invasion, and the building of the Berlin Wall. He was also present for the Space Race which jumpstarted Project Apollo. Kennedy was eventually assassinated on November 22, 1963 in Dallas, Texas. Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested and accused but was shot two days late before his trial commenced. Kennedy had four children by the names of Arabella, Caroline Bouvier, John Fitzgerald, and Patrick Bouvier. One of his most famous quotes was delivered at his inauguration and stated, “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” Kennedy is currently buried in the Arlington National Cemetery where his wife, Jacqueline, and his two youngest children were also laid to rest, followed by his brothers, Robert Kennedy and Edward M. Kennedy.
