All the categories of vehicles in the foreign driving license for a Kenyan citizen will be converted. Valid Foreign or international driving permit. Letter of confirmation from the authorized licensing authority of the home country. Valid national identification card. Valid passport.

Procedure

Kenya has phased out manual applications of driving licence and has moved to a digital phase where applications for are done on-line.

Apply Online

  1. Visit the NTSA Website and scroll down to the left hand side of the screen and click on the E-Citizen Link
  2. This will direct you to NTSA’s eCitizen portal which you will have to sign. If you do not have an E-Citizen account you will have to create one.
  3. Once you have logged in, select the National Transport and Safety Authority tab and then click on the make application tab.
  4. Click the (Plus sign) on the driving licence application then click on Conversion of Foreign License application.
  5. Fill in the required details which include:
    (a) Equivalent Vehicle classes as on your foreign License
    (b) Full names
    (c) Residential Address
    (d) Telephone Number
    (e) Email Address
    (f) Postal Address
    (g) Driving license country of Issue of foreign License
  6. After reviewing the details and you are satisfied that the information you have given is accurate, then, click submit.
  7. A fee of Ksh 750 is charged for the process. Instructions of payment will be generated automatically and provided online. Modes of payment include Mobile money and debit transfers.
  8. After you have paid and submitted a successful application, you will able to download and print your paid invoice from the payments menu
  9. You will receive a notification on when to visit the NTSA offices, at the Hillpark Building, Upperhill in Nairobi to collect your new driver’s license and complete the application process. You should present the following documents to the NTSA offices.

(a) Original passport and copy
(b) Original foreign driving license and copy
(c) Foreigners certificate
(d) Work Permit/ Dependant pass
(e) two passport Photographs
(f) eCitizen Payment invoice

Eligibility

  • Drivers from all commonwealth Countries who drive on the left side of the road.
  • Any person holding a license to drive a particular class of motor vehicle by the competent authority of a country other than The Republic of Kenya, may apply for conversion to a Kenyan driving licence to drive the equivalent class of motor vehicle

  • Conversion of a foreign Licenses application fees Ksh 750

Validity

  • The validity of the driving licence will either be for a period of twelve (12) months or three (3) years from the date of issue at the option of the holder
  • However, your license shall lose its validity if it gets cancelled due to any action that in violation of part VIII of the traffic act in the Kenyan Law.

Need for the Document

  • The driving license is issued as an authority to allow a person to drive a motor vehicle of any class on a road in Kenya.
  • No person is be allowed to drive a motor vehicle on road in Kenya unless he is the holder of a valid driving license or a provisional license endorsed in respect of that class of vehicle.
  • Any person driving a motor vehicle on a road is required by law carry his driving license or provisional license, and on being so required by a police officer, produce it for examination.
  • The driving licence shows compliance with Kenya traffic laws regarding driving.
