Outlook.com

When you add other email accounts to Outlook.com, you can use Outlook.com to send and read email messages from those accounts without leaving Outlook.com. Each account you add to Outlook.com is called a connected account. You can also create an email alias that uses the same inbox, sent, items, and contact list as your existing Outlook.com account.

Note: When you send email from your connected accounts using Outlook.com, messages are sent “on behalf of” your Outlook.com email address. To learn more, see Outlook.com sends email “on behalf of” my email address.

Important information about connected account syncing

Syncing from your connected account to your Outlook.com account is one-way only. Email sent from your connected account using Outlook.com will not appear in your connected account Sent Items. For example, email sent from your Gmail account using Outlook.com will not appear in your Gmail Sent Items. Similarly, if you delete, move, or read an email from a connected account in Outlook.com, you won’t see those changes when you go to your connected account.

Connect a Gmail account to Outlook.com

  1. In Outlook.com, go to Settings  > View all Outlook settings > Sync email.
  2. Under Connected accounts, select Gmail.
  3. On the Connect your Google account page, enter a display name for your Gmail account. This is the name recipients will see when they receive an email message from you. Select OK.
  4. Select the Gmail account you intend to use. You might need to provide a user name and password for your Gmail account.Note: If you’ve turned on two-step verification for your connected account, you’ll need to create an app password for that account. Go to the Gmail account security page to create the app password, and then return to Outlook.com to enter that password on the Connect your Google account page. Learn more about Google two-step verification here.
  5. Select Allow.

Connect other email accounts to Outlook.com

Follow these steps to connect a Yahoo Mail, AOL, or other email account to Outlook.com.

  1. In Outlook.com, go to Settings  > View all Outlook settings > Sync email.
  2. Under Connected accounts, select Other email accounts.
  3. On the Connect your account page, enter a display name (the name recipients will see when they receive an email message from you) and the full email address and password of the email account you want to connect to your Outlook.com account.Notes:
    • If you’ve turned on two-step verification for your connected account, you’ll need to create an app password for that account. Go to your provider’s account security page to create the app password, and then return to Outlook.com to enter that password on the Connect your account page.
    • Two-step verification makes it difficult for someone else to sign in to your email account. It uses two different forms of identity: your password and a contact method, such as a PIN or security code. Your email provider should have information on their web site about setting up two-step verification.
  4. Select OK.

Send email from a connected account

You can send email from any account you’ve connected to your Outlook.com account.

  • Select From and choose which email address you want to use.

You can also change your default From address:

  1. In Outlook.com, go to Settings  > View all Outlook settings > Sync email.
  2. Under Set default From address, choose the address you want to use and select Save.

Frequently asked questions about connected accounts on Outlook.com

Can I create a new email address within my existing Outlook.com account?

Yes, this is called an email alias.

How many connected accounts can I add to Outlook.com?

You can connect a maximum of 20 accounts to your Outlook.com account. If you’ve connected more than 20 accounts, you won’t be able to send or receive messages from any of them. Removing some connected accounts so that the total is 20 or less will resolve the issue.
