Safaricom PLC and Ant Financial Services – the world’s largest fintech services provider – have announced a partnership that will allow Kenyans shopping on AliExpress to pay for their purchases using M-PESA. The move especially targets micro-traders in the country who source for goods and other supplies from manufacturers in China, and signifies Safaricom’s continued push to position M-PESA as a truly global mobile money transfer and payments platform.

MPESA and Ali Express entered a partnership in May 2019 to enable customers on the e-commerce platform make mobile payments when buying goods. This is an addition on the MPESA Global initiatives which have seen the premier Safaricom service make deals with several fintech companies for easy financial transactions across various platforms.

About MPESA

So far, MPESA is the largest mobile money transfer in the world with a majority of its 21 million customers based in Kenya. More than KES 34,800 moved through the platform per second in 2018despite losing 1.6 percent of its customer base to rivals Airtel and Telkom. This amount is a result of at least 1,200 transactions per second on the MPESA platform. At least KES 1.58 trillion was moved between July – Sept 2018 alone.
